the next day my wife found one in the garage. we put the bird in a cage and we are feeding it smashed weenis every hour . when the bird makes noise,it is letting us know it is hungry, & we feed it . my question is am i feeding it the right food,& when it is ready to leave will it know how to feed its self. i think about no more than a week, it will be ready to fly. i do not know the bird type but see them all over the place, and they are white , grey,& brown.

  1. White grey and brown is probably a chickadee, but I'm not sure if that's around where you live. I would say about a week would do it. Maybe when it starts to flap its wings and tries to fly...

  2. OMG! - you are going to kill that bird!  Please stop what you are doing.   You are feeding it hot dogs? Are you kidding? I doubt this bird will live, once the sodium overloads it's system.

The bird you found is a fledgling.  It was supposed to be on the ground.  That's where they belong.   Once baby birds have developed feathers, they leave the nest.  They CAN'T fly.  They have to learn from the ground.  While they are on the ground, the parents continue to feed and care for them.

Please stop feeding the bird, take it out of the cage and return it to it's parents.  Leave it beneath or on the lower branches of a bush or shrub.  Then leave the area so the parents can safely return.

  3. if you tell me what beak color and size and shape i could then tell you what bird it is okay?

  4. Please put these birds back for the parents to care for immediately! If the bird is fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling and has left the nest on it's own and it's parents are caring for it. It is normal for birds to leave the nest before they can fly.   You need to replace it where you found it..preferably in a scrub or tree so it is relatively safe from predators, and the parents should come back to feed it.  If it is unfeathered...then look for a nest and if you can find it...replace it into the nest.  Do not worry about your scent being on the chick..birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and will NOT reject a baby that has been touched.  If you cannot find a nest, get the bird to a local wildlife rehab for it's best chance of survival.  Also, keep in mind, it is illegal for you to try and raise this bird on your own.  Look for a rehab here:
