Question:

Found a baby nestling - what to do!? NEED HELP!?

We found a feathered baby nestling right outside our home, it fell from our neighbor's tree. We tried to put it back on the tree but we couldn't find the nest, and my dad fears that cats might eat it so we brought it home and put it in a box. Now we're not sure what to do. Is it hungry? Should we feed it? If so, feed it what? Give it water? Should we just put it back on the tree regardless of the nest? I guess we can call animal protection (it's late in the evening here in Israel--not sure they operate right now anyway), but I figure let's see what the internet has to say first.

  1. Mother birds won't help the baby any more if a human touched them. So please try not to touch any more.

  2. If the bird is fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling and has left the nest on it's own and it's parents are caring for it. It is normal for birds to leave the nest before they can fly.   You need to replace it where you found it..preferably in a scrub or tree so it is relatively safe from predators, and the parents should come back to feed it.  If it is unfeathered...then look for a nest and if you can find it...replace it into the nest.  Do not worry about your scent being on the chick..birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and will NOT reject a baby that has been touched.  If you cannot find a nest, get the bird to a local wildlife rehab for it's best chance of survival.  Also, keep in mind, it is illegal for you to try and raise this bird on your own.  Look for a rehab here:

  3. I would call your local vet for advice. Or, perhaps you have a wildlife rescue group in your area.  I think it is nice you have the heart to try to help the poor baby bird. : ) Have a great day and good luck.

  4. well, you should feed it some bird seed and worms. most birds like that. when i gets lighter out in the day. try to find a safe place for the bird to rest and then let it go.

  5. yeah, some jerks who were working for my neighbor knocked down a nest with 4 hatchlings. they are in are preinial bed now and there mom and 2 other birds are taking care of them and stuff. just do something like that!
