He can;t sit on the perch, but seems to be alert. We are posting signs around the neighbourhood looking for the owner, but we don't know what to do with it.

  1. keep ur eye on it, make sure it is eating   check out http://www.parrotcentral.net/cockatiels.... for good info on cockatiels

  2. Taking Olivia's advice is the smartest thing to do but if you have to keep the bird with you for a while before seeking help, here's the advice I can give:

It may just be feeling vulnerable right now, which is why it's not perching and stays on the bottom of the cage. It should calm down after a few days if it is not bothered or moved too much. You should put the cage in one place and let it get used to it's surroundings.

Cockatiels are friendly birds so if you talk to it softly, that will help make it more comfortable though even the most comfortable cockatiel can have a night fright, where they usually get spooked by something and end up thrashing around the cage at night in panic. This is something that most cockatiels owners have gone through--myself included. Turning on the light and talking to them calms them down but  sometimes they damage a few feathers that will grow back, though sometimes they need immediate assistance when certain feathers break and bleeding occurs.

Having cockatiel seeds in one dish and a separate dish for vegetables and fruits is a good idea (some favorites are carrots, broccoli, sweet potatoes, dried red peppers, spinach, corn, grapes, apples and oranges. They also enjoy millet sprays, which can be given as a treat). A cuttlebone should be placed in the cage for calcium requirements and always provide a dish of fresh water.

  3. Take it to your local SPCA or Bird Rescue

  4. Your dong the right thing.

What really might help is tell your local police department, Someone who lost a bird might ask them to contact them if they hear anything. Another thing is tell your local shelters about what you found and give them your information. A pet owner would check there. And if there's no answer you can give it a good home, If you give it to a shelter chances are it wont have a good home.

  5. put FOUND: cockatoo on craigslist.com and add pics i found people missing them on craigslist

  6. yeah keep posting pictures and signs for it, cause im sure someones missing it
