Yesterday this kid I don't know found a little humming bird on the disc golf course I was at, he didn't know what to do with it so he gave it to me...I used to breed parakeets but I have some questions about the humming bird.

It can't fly, it flaps its wings but doesn't lift off the ground. The stomach is bald with a few downy feathers. The beak is shorter than you'd expect. Does this mean it's a baby?

Also, it has some serious mites going on. I know it's normal for wild birds to have mites but is there anything I can do? The poor thing is swimming with them.

And last, can a hummingbird live on the food you can buy at the store? The concentrate that you mix with water?

  1. All birds have serious mites going on. Equate bedding spray in the pharmacy section of walmart will take care of this. It is an aersol, so wait 10-15 minue=tes after spraying to put the bird in.(never spray directly on the bird) I don't think that she will make it, sounds like she got hit with a frisbee.

  2. Take it to the vets

  3. It sounds like it could be a baby. I know this may sound nasty, but if it is a baby, then it means that the mother has kicked it out of its nest for a reason ie: (the mother knew that it was sick and that it would possibly affect the other chicks)

But dont give up hope though! Although it is very hard to keep a chick alive, its not impossible. Humming birds have a different diet compared to other birds, and they live on nectar and other sweet substances in nature. Try getting some fresh juice (100% pure berry is good) always make sure that it is 100% pure fruit juice as the others will have preservatives and other harmful chemicals in it that can kill the little bird. Here are some steps to help you out, and seeming that you used to breed birds, im sure you already know more or less what to do.

    1. get a Syringe

    2. get a small thin silicone pipe or tube to fit onto the end of the syringe (this is because the syringe itself can damage the birds beak, you can ask for a tube at your local hospital, drug store, or clinic, and cute it to be about 3cm long)

    3. Avi Plus is a great brand to feed the bird with, and petsmart or other big aviarys sell different brand for specific bird needs.

    4. You clould also Pulpurize fresh fruit in a blender for the humming bird, because this is what they live on in nature, and make the blend thin enough to feed to the bird through the syringe. Just make sure that you avoid banana, and apple seeds. As this can upset a birds digestive system, and contains iron witch in turn, is poisonous to them.

And i suggest getting a lamp and a little container, or a heat pad to put the bird in and make sure that its kept warm!! Also, you might want to check that its not illegal to keep a humming bird in your country/state. Some states have laws against keeping certain animals.

Hope this helps you and good luck! =]

  4. Try her on some sugar water solution (4 parts water to one part sugar) make sure it is properly disolved and cooled.  If that works,  then she will need small insects.

try getting in touch with the Humming bird society.  they may be able to give you more advice.
