I went to the beach yesterday at Will Rogers/Santa Monica and when I got home, I found a very small lizard had snuck into my backpack. I put it in a small, well-ventilated reptile tank and put some sand in it.... but what do i feed it? I cant take it back to the beach because its so far away. It's really small, probably very young. It's sand colored and about 4 cm long and 1 cm wide.

  1. yeah u need to post a pic so we can determine what kind it is then go from there

  2. That's a western fence lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis) which is a type of swift (spiny lizard) also known as a blue belly.

They eat insects such as crickets and it would do better on news paper instead of sand, sand can cause impaction. They also enjoy fallen brush to climb on.

Here's a care sheet on them:

  3. can you take a picture of it and post so we can tell what it is?

In the meantime, the lizard needs hiding places to make it feel at home.  If you found him at the beach, make sure there is a small bowl with water, some plants and some sand.  Perhaps add some driftwood and make sure there are hiding places.

If the aquarium you have him in is small enough, take him to a pet store (covered in a blanket so as to not freak him out too much) and ask the lizard guy for advice.

  4. crickets are your best bet for any lizard.

  5. probably eats insects

  6. probably a young fence lizard,

feed it pinhead crickets, small mealworms and waxworms. He can be kept in a 20 gallon tank for as long as he lives with no problem.  Keeping him on sand is fine, you will need to get retpile bulbs that give off UVA & UVB, also he'll need a basking spot of close to 100 degrees and the rest of the tank shouldn't drop below 80 during the day and at night it should ge under 65-70. Good luck.

  7. little flying bugs if you put the tank outside with a light buy it tons of little bugs will come!

and good luck with you new lizard!

  8. Its an anole and it they dont have to be by the beach you can just let it go by your house and if you want to keep it go to www.google.com and search anole care and you will find how to take care of it, and btw they eat crickets and you should not have sand in its cage

    Good luck

  9. maybe bug that are outside like under rocks or crickets at the petstore
