how do i find out if my mother or myself were left money by someone in my family in one way or another.both of our last names have changed,this death was a long time ago,and to top it off,i was adopted by these "parents"at the age of five.

  1. If you were legally adopted you no longer belong to the other family.  Unless the deceased mentioned you in the will by name, you would no longer be eligible to inherit.

    If you know the name of the person, you can check the social security death index and find the last place of residence of the deceased.  That might help you locate the court of probate.


  2. Contact the court house in the area they lived in. There should've been a publication of some sort after their death as to what they did with the property.

  3. USA Answer:

    Call the probate court in the county they were living in when they died. You'll need their names and death dates. Wills are a matter of public record, but there may be a fee for a copy.

  4. Another way to check, would be to do an on-line "Unclaimed Property Inquiry" from the Dept. of Treasury.  All unclaimed monies are transferred to the government for holding.  There is a time-limit though!  Good Luck.  I know this because not only did I find money once, but twice for two different family members!
