Question:

Found rotting dead fish in tank

I've just been cleaning out my tank and i noticed one of my fish wasn't moving. I poked the plant it was hidden in and it didn't move. Anyway, i grabbed it out of my tank with a net and to my nasty surprise the fish (platy) had most of its body gone. It also had the foulest smell coming from it.

I have no idea how long the fish has been dead but now i'm worried about my other fish in the tank, 2 of which are babies. Do you think they will be alright, or is there anything i can put in the water? I'm going away in two days so i can't keep an eye on them. I'm also worried now that more fish will die and they too will rot in my tank.

  1. just clean your tank more often and dont over feed! if you have a bio filter the nyou might have to change the cartridge.

  2. forst dont completley change the watr they will go into shock also cause ther is godd bacteria in the tank that they need i di this withou knowing  and all my fish died go to hte pet store and ask for an aquarium vaccum there cheap. only empy half the water then put in any chemicals like wter clarifer neutralizer and melafix (will get rid of any sickness) and anything else your told youll need

    hop it helped =]

  3. i would clean out the tank...

    put new water in..

just do it ASAP cause the water is probably bad now.

    hope this helps!

  4. I'd give the tank a full clean out- new water etc.

  5. Well how long has he been rotting in the tank? If it was just overnight or a couple of of hours then there should be nothing to worry about. It would take much longer for him to be toxic. Like over the course of a week. Also when a fish dies it isn't uncommon for the other fish to cannibalize him and treat him like a snack. That is probably why he looked the way he did. But if it makes you feel better you can do a 25% or maybe even a 50% water change if you want. Sorry to hear about your fish.

  6. unfortunately you will lose fish, the others will feed upon the dead and over time, sometimes days the dead fish, depending on size can pollute the water, best do a partial water change,50 per cent and rince the filter pad/foam in the water you have syphoned out, replace filter, and remember to put in some water safe and same temp water, good luck, though they should be fine.

  7. you prob will want to clean it agian or the diesese will spread or,,

just get this bottle and add a few drop to purify the water clean ask the experts at the pet shop hun

  8. Clean the tank and everything in it, do not use soap.

Use hot water and a rag/sponge.

buy a filter if you don't have one.

    They should be fine.

  9. Dont worry about them they are harder than you think. The other fish Will have fed off the dead one probably. Its what happens in the wild rivers and seas of the world.
