You might search for "snakes of ______ " where the blank would be your State (or country.)

In the US, most libraries have a field guide to reptiles. Follow the keys or compare the photos.

You might also look for a herpetological society near you.

Posting a link to a photo of the unfortunate frozen baby would help.Why did you kill it? Why not just take a pic and release? It sounds like a water snake or gopher snake.
