My husband's great grandmother had some stuff in box's and we just found them and two thing's really stuck out. They are plate's that are breath taking. On them is the name Lt.Col. E.J. McNamee march 1953. On the back it has his signature and it has a stamp that say's Haviland, France. We where wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to find out more info. about the plate's or the person that made them. We do have pic. Thank You

  1. Check Replacements.com and you can email pics and they'll tell you about it

  2. Haviland is the name of the company that made Limoges pottery...it is known worldwide for its craftsmanship.  I would have it professionally appraised because a small pillbox made this decade can be worth as much as $200.  This link will teach you a little more about it.  As for Lt.Col. E.J. McNamee, I'm sure he was an allied soldier based in the area at the time.  You may be able to search military records to find him.  Hope that helps!

  3. You can check military records about the Lt.Col. Sounds like he either retired then or received the plate for commanding men in Korea,Germany, England etc...etc Haviland china is collectible. Look it up in anantique book.

  4. First off....Haviland, France NOR Limoges is the name of a company....it's a region, kind of like a city and state, in France.

Lt.Col. E.J. McNamee was NOT in Haviland, France, certainly not in 1953. The military was in Korea then and we had no military bases there either.

The plate CAME from Haviland, France, home of the famous Limoges China. Top of the line stuff, Limoges is.

The plate itself was probably a retirement present.

I'd say there was a excellent chance that the plate is Limoges, even though it doesn't SAY Limoges, but still made in the "tradition" and very much a nice, classy parting gift for a military Lt Colonel.

Many people don't realize that Limoges is a region in France rather than the name of a factory. Limoges was produced by a number of factories in Haviland, France from the late 1700s until around 1930.

Production did not cease in 1930, however. This arbitrary cutoff date simply denotes a change in the global economy when the styles of Limoges wares notably changed from very elaborate to more basic in design.

There are so many Haviland marks – some of them with Limoges added and some without.

And fortunantly for you, 1953 wasn't that long ago and Haviland, Limoges France china is HIGHLY collectable.

See below for some excellent sites and collectors! Good luck!
