Founders Cup to see bigger crowd this year
The officials of the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup have said that the tournament is going to lure more spectators this year than the last edition.
According to the details, the $1.5 million tournament was expected to cross the number of spectators present last year.
However, the officials have surprised observers by telling that there will be 20,000 more people at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge’s Wildfire Golf Club, Phoenix this week.
The field of the Founders Cup is solid enough to keep the level of interest high, as spectators are expecting a tough battle among the big names on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association).
Fans have already started flocking to Phoenix to see their favourite players shining on the course.
The reason behind so much enthusiasm is that this is the first LPGA event of the 2012 season on a domestic level, and American fans are thrilled to see a tough battle.
The USA has been out of the headlines since the start of the current season, as the LPGA concentrated its focus on other countries — particularly Asia.
The officials said American fans are golf crazy and they waited impatiently for the LPGA Tour to come here again.
They added that the LPGA is doing a good job, as it is necessary to expand the Tour’s footprints across the globe.
Thailand, Singapore and Australia are the regions that were singled out as the first three LPGA events this season.
Chris Garrett, Director of RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup said that the officials are amazed at the level of enthusiasm fans are showing. He said the tournament is only entering into its second year and fans’ response is superb.
He said that in order to cater to a big crowd, special arrangements have been made at Phoenix. He said that tickets sale is pretty good.
"Ticket sales are going well. We're up a little bit over last year. We're hoping for a big week of rocket sales," said Chris Garrett. "We're getting more people every day as we ramp up to the event".
John Wright, Director of Golf at the Marriott, said that since the tournament is offering a big purse this year and there is also prize money, players and fans are taking keen interest.
