Four Canadian teams advance from Country Quota Playoffs – 2011 Quebec Open Jeep
The 2011 Quebec Open Jeep Beach Volleyball Tournament has kick started on Tuesday, July 19, as the historic 227th edition of the event in Canada commenced with the Country Quota Playoffs. St-Jean Berchmans and Seminaire des Peres Maristes in the Quebec borough
of Sillery hosted the CQ matches this year as teams from Canada and USA contested the qualifications.
The host, Canada, is playing with 10 female duos in the competition. Four of them are already confirmed for the Main-Draw on account of their better seeding on the international charts. The rest of the six players have to go through the qualification tournament.
Names of the teams in the CQ were as followed:
Victoria Altomare/ Melissa Humana-Paredes Rebecca Billing/ Kristina Vlcek Jamie Lynn Broder/ Ashley Voth Victoria Cowley/ Alexandra Mingay Melanie Savoie/ Helene Rancourt
A total of three matches were played in Canadian Country Quota Playoffs. Supposedly, four matches were lined-up but the pairing of Broder and Voth earned a bye over and moved forward to the next round without putting much effort.
Altomare-Humana-Paredes vs. Savoie-Rancourt 2-0 (21-18, 21-16)
In the first CQ match on Tuesday afternoon brought Altomare/ Humana and Savoie/ Rancourt together. A good number of spectators had come to watch the game because entry was free. Altomare and Humana developed a great chemistry between them and led the game
with better score. Savoie was fond of hitting long cross court shots but solid defence of opponents created trouble for her. First set was a close fight, until the Alotmare side scored quick points after the second technical timeout. First set ended with the
final score 21-18, while Altomare/ Humana were successful.
The opening of the second set was full of attack attempts from both sides. Savoie/ Rancourt struggled to gain better status but charged-up duo of Altomare/ Humana denied their efforts. Second set ended in the same fashion and Altomre/ Humana were tagged
as victorious team in the CQ Playoff. Success in the CQs enabled them to advance to the Qualification Tournament on Wednesday. The match lasted for 36 minutes.
Martin-Schaerli vs. Cowley-Mingay 1-2 (24-22, 10-21, 12-15)
Country Quota Qualifying match between Martin/ Schaerli and Cowley/ Mingay was an intense fight on centre court. The contest spanned over three sets. Opening set of the match created a lot of buzz as situation remained undecided until the final whistle of
referee. It was an excellent display of game full of tactics from both sides. Martin/ Schaerli pulled off success in first set with a slight margin of 2 points at 24-22.
The early stats of the match favoured Martin/ Schaeli but determined tandem of Cowley and Mingay set real pace in the following set. They had grasped the game plan of opponents and came up with the right strategy. Heavy strike of volleys and tricky bump-passes
totally disillusioned the opponents. Martin and Schaerli were restricted to a low score of 10, while the other side crossed the finish line. The duo of Cowley/ Mingay didn’t just stop there. They kept the same energy and closed the game by winning 15-point
golden set with 3-poing margin. Martin/ Schaerli lost the match and dropped qualification for second round.
Billings-Vlcek vs. Cross-Whitaker 2-0 (21-17, 21-16)
In another CQ affair, Billings and Vlcek took on Cross/ Whitaker. The former demonstrated better play and finished the match in two straight sets. Billings and Vlcek successfully booked a slot in the Qualification Tournament, which will be their first step
towards the Main-Draw.
