Four candidates eyeing Chandigarh Golf Club presidency – Golf news
Four candidates are eyeing the position of the president of the Chandigarh Golf Club situated south of Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh, India.
Four eminent candidates have applied for the position of the par-72 golf club, which includes Malwinder Singh, brother of Ex-Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, Lt Col J S Kang, Punjab cadre IAS officer HIS Grewal and former Punjab DGP S R Sharma.
The poll will be held on 24 April, 2011 while the applications for the position will be entertained from 4 April. The board of directors decided to keep the format, as the last two posts faced a lot of controversies. No elections were held in last two sessions
and candidates were chosen through direct contest, which later became subject of criticism.
Singh is one of the candidates who are keen on winning the polls to bring improvement in the general infrastructure of the course, which was constructed in 1962.
He met the press on Tuesday and said, “My main poll plank this time would be strengthening the infrastructure of the club. Our course is three times better than the Delhi Golf Club but needs improvement, specially the 7th fairway. The bar and catering services,
general upkeep of the club, upkeep of staff too need to be improved.”
He emphasised his agenda and said that apart from bringing changes on the course, he will work on raising the salaries of the caddies, who are awarded a meagre amount. He said, “If I win, I will take up this matter at the Emergency General Meeting as it
needs the approval of the full house as each and every member is affected by it.”
Caddies are paid Rs 85-110 per game at the Club, while they are paid Rs 500 in other parts of Delhi, which is the capital of the country.
In addition, he mentioned that the club required better rest rooms and adequate water facility to make the guest experience superb. He added that he would take the matter to the municipal corporation in order to reach a conclusion.
