  1. Make sure the person who is workiing with the parents know  about the special ed laws. THis is the MAIN thing.

Schools all over the USA are very corrupt with special ed and parent advocates are in GREAT demand.

these advocates can help parents greatly by following the laws and make the schools do this also so their child can be helped.

  2. 1. Listen, that is really listen to what the parents have to say about their child, they know their child better than anyone else, so they will know the child's likes and dislikes, their strengths and weaknesses. Also listen to the child's wants and needs, or they will be very quick at letting you know of their displeasure.

Many parents will tell you know one listens to them.

    2. Empathy and understanding, parents have a tough role trying to be a parent and advocate for their child, so be empathetic and understanding to their moods, and frustrations.

    3. Learn about the specific disability or learning disability of the child, your going to work with so you have a clear understanding of how it may affect their ability to do things, either cognitively and or physically.

    4. Respect and dignity, anyone and everyone is entitled to treated with respect and dignity at all times.

    5. Networking with other agencies etc, so as other issues arise you can put the parent on the the correct service.

There so much more to do when working with parents, these are what I consider to be fairly important. I think one other thing is to look for signs of stress, depression etc, as this is a good indicator of the family not coping.
