This varies by period. Corn used to be top of the list, but with demand for ethanol it may have lost that status.

Ethanol has taken over #1 spot.

Just as a side view, Wikipedia  lists feed grains as though feed grains were a commodity, but of course it represents a range of commodities used for a purpose.

When we ask what is highly subsidized or protected, we need to divide total subsidies by tons of the commodity. A commodity with a large tonnage but low subisdy will appear in Wikipedia, wrongly,  as being highly subsidized.

Wikipedia looks at all history or unspecified history rather than what is happening this year. This gives anyone looking to make good policy decisions a totally warped perception of current reality.

In the US the absolute, most highly subsidized crop is tobacco.  The most protected, Roundup Ready technology.
