Four players tied for the top spot in the first round of Mobile Bay LPGA Classic
The first round of the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic concluded in a flurry of excitement, with Lindsey Wright, Jennifer Rosales, Caroline Hedwall and Katie Futcher sharing the lead after they carded a 67 each.
The tournament is being played at Magnolia Grove’s Crossings Course, with a strong field containing several top-ranked LPGA stars.
However, the four leaders grabbed attention at Crossings Course, as they displayed a unique game right from the start of the tournament.
Aussie Lindsey Wright was superb, as she recorded five birdies. The best part was that she avoided shooting bogeys, helping her strengthen her position on the leaderboard.
Nevertheless, Lindsey found the game slightly more difficult when Jennifer Rosales came close to grabbing the first round lead.
Rosales, the Filipino star, kicked off the round in an impressive style, as she made calculated strokes on most of the holes. The weather conditions remained calm most of the day, helping players capitalise on comfortable winds.
Rosales remained a bit under pressure on the front nine, as she made just one birdie and bogeyed the par-4 9th. However, on the back nine, the experienced star picked up pace and drained 5 birdies.
She cheered the spectators when she scored two straight birdies on the par-4 10th and par-4 11th. She again let the fans see her skills on the on the 13th and 14th, reeling off another two back-to-back birdies.
Katie Futcher of the United States shot seven birdies, but lost momentum on two holes, making bogeys. Futcher stunned the fans by seizing a spot on top of the leaderboard, as she was not considered a hot favourite.
Speaking to the media at the end of the round, Futcher said that she put her best foot forward, which worked.
She said that taking a better on-course snack really helped her improver her game. She said that ever since she quit having bacon on the course, she has become more agile.
Moreover, Swedish Caroline Hedwall also enjoyed a strong start. She posted a bogey-free round, with five birdies.
