Four records improved on third day of the South Africa Age Group Championships
The third day of the South Africa Age Group Swimming Championship concluded with the improvement of four South African records. Previously, swimmers have already lowered five records in the first two days of the championship including three records by Michelle
Weber and one by the 200m butterfly gold medallist, Chad Le Clos.
The day started with the Men’s 100m freestyle, where Chad Le Clos won the age-group 17-18 event in a time of 50.69 seconds, in contrast to his preliminary round’s 52.42 seconds. He finished ahead of Brett Walsh and Bryon Doyle in a time of 51.70 and 52.09
seconds, respectively.
Then Jo-Mari Van Zyl conquered the Women’s 100m freestyle in a time of 58.93 seconds, a time just 0.02 seconds ahead of Natasha De Vos, who finished second in 58.95 seconds. He was followed by Terianne N Brown in 59.55 seconds. On the other hand, under-14
swimmer, Michelle Weber won the same event in a time of 58.59 seconds followed by Kyna Pereira and Sabrina Kaszechki, who touched the wall in a time of 58.63 and 59.51 seconds, respectively.
Next was the Men’s 100m breast-stroke final, where Brenden Crawford of the under-14 category won the event in a record time of 1:07.41 minutes, ahead of Mark Hunter and Joshua Steyn who came in 1:08.43 and 1:09.62 minutes, respectively. In the Women’s corner,
Franko Jonker touched the wall first in a time of 1:12.73 minutes ahead of Taryn Mackenzie and Kelly Gunnell, who registered 1:12.75 and 1:12.98 minutes, respectively.
World champion Clos again presented a wonderful swim by winning the 400m Individual Medley in a time of 4:23.79 minutes, a time well in advance to his following finishers Michael Meyer and Martin Vogel, who touched the wall in 4:28.53 and 4:31.03 minutes,
respectively. Chad again dominated the 50m butterfly with his wonderful timing of 24.71 seconds against Walsh’s 24.87 seconds effort.
Under-16 swimmer, Vanessa Mohr, improved the record for women’s 50m butterfly in a time of 26.76 seconds. She was comfortably ahead of Kayla Ferreira and Megan Hesse, who recorded a time of 29.07 and 29.42 minutes, respectively.
SGUL-KZ’s Le Clos also won the gold medal in the 4*100m medley relay in the under 15-18 age group category in a time of 3:51.76 minutes. The team was followed by WATR-CG in 3:53.06 minutes.
The morning session of the championship will include the events of the 50m freestyle, 200m IM and the 50m back-stroke for men and women of the age-group 18 and under.
