Four teams are in queue for final of inaugural Asian Champions Trophy tournament in Ordos, China
Four teams including India, Japan, the Asian Champions South Korea and the Asian Games Champions Pakistan are eyeing to confirm their place in the final of the inaugural edition of the Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament being played in Ordos, China
from September 3 to 11.
The Greenshirts are leading the points table with nine points after their four matches and a match remaining against the arch-rivals, India. The Greenshirts performance in the tournament remained clinical and impressive as they defeated Malaysia, the hosts,
China and the Asian Champions South Korea in fine fashion. Although they had lost their match against a relatively weaker side, Japan by one goal to three. The Greenshirts just need a draw against India to make it through to the final with ten points.
The Indians are at second place on the points table with eight points having won two of the four matches while two were drawn. The Indians will have to defeat the arch-rivals, Pakistan to confirm their place in the final irrespective of the result of Japan
and Malaysia match. If India plays a draw game against Pakistan then they will have to wait the outcome of Japan’s match against the Malaysians.
If Japan, who is currently at the third place on the points table with seven points, defeats the Malaysians then they will be through to the final with ten points and if they draw or lose to Malaysia then they will be out of the chase for the final.
The Asian Champions, South Korea currently are at the fourth place on the points table with six points and still have their chances to qualify for the final depending on the Pakistan-India and Japan-Malaysia matches. If Japan loses to Malaysia and India
to Pakistan then Korea’s victory over China will put them into the final.
In case of a draw between Pakistan and India the Koreans will have to beat China with a difference of more than eight goals as India have a goal difference of plus seven goals while the Koreans have a difference of minus one goal.
