Question:

Four week old baby has a dry cough, should I be worried?

Hi, last night my baby who is four weeks today was up ALL night long, sometimes he was just very fidgety and other times he was crying. I also noticed that he started coughing every now and then, a very dry cough. He seems okay today but he still is coughing (not much, just every now and then) Is it normal or should I be worried? I will of course check with a doctor if it continues today but I just wanted to see what other moms ( and dads!) thought. Thank you so much!

  1. Is there a fan blowing in the same room as him at night? I noticed with my 4 month old that when we use a fan in the room, he wakes up coughing alot. He may be getting a cold, call the doc to be sure.

  2. coughing is another sign of teething

  3. If you had called the doctor last night they probably would've told you to take him to the hospital then. With babies that young, they're just as paranoid as you. If it keeps up today, obviously yes call him in. But keep a close eye on him. Make sure he's not congested, he's breathing okay, sleeping okay, eating okay and doesn't have a fever. You might want to try putting a humidifier in his room. That would probably help.

  4. More then likely he is just fine, I am willing to bet you have had some interesting weather where you live :). A dry cough is usually just fine, as long as he does not sound like a dying seal..lol...aka the croup cough. If he is not running a fever or wheezing, I would not worry. He is four weeks old so he probably doesn't have another pedi appt. for another month, so if you continue to worry, just call and ask the docs opinion. I know how it is to worry about your baby, but he is just fine, I am sure.  Good luck from a mommy of five :)

  5. Call baby's doctor TODAY, even if baby is no longer coughing. You should always run things by the doctor(after time, you will know more and probably develop the ability to make more independent parenting judgments.  Meanwhile make sure baby is hydrated(drinking enough fluids), & Dr should keep an eye out for allergies( more obvious ones include cat in house...) Any which way, babies should be watched closely pretty much all the time,  don't listen to the schmucks who are dull enough to use the word "overprotective" about baby care! (It's code for "I could never focus my attention that well or long..."

DR may advise to be aware that after all is said & done, coughs can persist a long time// just keep them informed!
