Frédéric Michalak expresses his desire to move back to France – Rugby News
French international professional Rugby Union utility backs player, Frédéric Michalak, has expressed his desire to re-join the French domestic Rugby Union circuit. He made these comments in
an interview with the French sports daily L'Equipe, at the end of 2011 South African domestic Rugby Union competition, Currie Cup, on Wednesday, November 2.
Talking to officials of the sports daily, Michalak said, “I know they would like to extend my contract but I want to come back to Europe next summer.”
Earlier this year, Toulouse born Michalak re-signed with the South African Super Rugby franchise, Sharks and participated in the Sharks last few matches of their 2011 Super Rugby campaign.
Later at the end of the 2011 Super Rugby season, he represented Natal Sharks in the 2011 Currie Cup competition. He delivered some exceptional performances during the tournament as the defending
champions lost their title in the final of the competition against the Golden Lions.
Sharks won 10 of their 14 round matches and finished in second place on the 2011 Currie Cup table with 48 points.
Michalak finished the tournament as the highest point scorer. He scored 192 points during the competition.
Elaborating his decision to end his stay at the South Africa, Michalak termed playing for the French national side as the main reason for his decision. He said, “I want to play with Les Bleus
again and that is easier when you play in Europe.”
France is the runner up of the 2011 Rugby World Cup competition as the tournament hosts defeated them by a small margin in the final of the competition on Sunday, October 23 at Eden Park, Auckland.
The 29-year-old Michalak made his international debut for Les Bleus against Springboks in November 2001. He so far has made 54 international appearances, which includes 38 starts. He has scored
252 international points for France, comprising of nine tries, 39 penalties, 36 conversions and 6 drop goals. He also represented France in 2003 and 2007 Rugby World Cups.
However, he has not represented France in any international game this year. He last played an international for France during 2010 Six Nations against Wales. Earlier this year, he represented
the Barbarians in their first summer international for 2011 season against England.
