my son was running at the play ground and ran into a pole. his whole left side is swollen and his eye is black and blue and in pain . i took him to the emergency room and they said he has a fractured cheek bone. sent him home with strong pain killers. will this heal on its own? also was instructed to see a facial surgeon in 2 weeks for a follow up? what will he do for my son?

  1. There's no way to put a cast on his face, so the facial surgeon will (once the swelling and bruising have gone down) take x-rays to see if he/she needs to surgically adjust any bone that may have moved enough to cause a problem.

  2. If it is bad enough they can put plates in to hold the bones in place.

But its only fractured so he should be alright!

    Good luck to him.

  3. yeah this happened to me last year

and It just healed normally, but hurt for a while.

  4. Since there isnt a way to cast a cheek bone they have to let it heal naturally. Which is why he was given strong pain killers because it may help limit facial movements and it will knock out the pain that he will feel from moving his face.

As far as the surgeon that is because if the bone starts healing with say one part on top of the other he may end up needing surgery. But dont worry to much, that probably wont be an issue unless the DR already say that in the xrays.
