Question:

Frame or complete bike ideas for a touring/commuter bike w/Rohloff QR hub?

I was given a Rohloff hub in trade for some tech support. It is the non-disc, quick-release type, already in a 26" wheel. I also have the chain tensioner. The hub is meant for 135mm rear spacing.

I would like to build or buy a bike for commuting over some crappy roads and sidewalks. Some wide tires, rack, and fenders are a high priority for this bike. I prefer steel frames, and if possible I'd like to avoid using the chain tensioner (ugly). That means an eccentric bottom bracket or rear dropouts that allow the rear wheel to move to adjust chain tension.

So far, my top 2 ideas are the Surly Karate Monkey and the IRO Rob Roy. I am totally open to suggestions, and I'm in no hurry since I already have a bike.

  1. Surly Cross Check. Semi horizontal dropouts with adjusting screws, cantilever bosses, lots of eyelets for racks and fenders, and spaced for either 130 or 135mm hubs. Clearance for 700x45c tires. I'd love to do a Rohloff on my Surly-maybe you could try it and let me know how it works out.
