François Calmels hopes to post a strong finish at ALLIANZ Open Côtes d’Armor Bretagne on Challenge Tour
Frenchman François Calmels finished for a disappointing 57th at the Barclays Kenya Open on the Challenge Tour but he is happy to have at least made the cut on his return to mainstream professional golf.
Calmels suffered a freak accident four months ago, when he severely wounded his fingers trying to save his pet dog.
Calmels was up against some aspiring contingent of Challenge Tour at the European Tour’s Qualifying School Final Stage when he suffered the dreadful accident.
Having barged into the elevator of his residential suit, Calmels’ pet dog suddenly barged out of the lift door before it closed and all Calmels could think of was to rap the leash tightly around his hand in order to break it.
He ended up badly damaging his four fingers on the right hand and insists that he has now fully recovered from the injury.
Calmels said, “I have no feeling in my index finger, I had four fingers cut to the bone, so I couldn’t play for four months. It was a bad time, but it’s over now and it doesn’t matter too much”.
Calmels has been part of the Challenge Tour for a while and said that it was better for him that the injury did not happen in the middle of the tour.
He admitted that he is not in the right frame of mind after the disastrous accident and has been laid off from mainstream sport for quite a while.
He said that it may be important to have the right form in the game but it’s more important to have the right frame of mind.
Calmels also admitted that he had a bad year coming down to the Muthaiga Golf Course and could have done better to improve his rankings on the tour.
He added, "I haven’t been playing well enough for a few years, but I’ve always managed to do something and get through the season. But last year it got worse so my confidence was low".
"You can work on the swing but you have to be in a good place mentally, and that wasn’t the case for me last year".
Calmels hails from Bussy-Saint-George Golf Club where he plays alongside the current European Tour player, Romain Wattel, who pulled in a strong finish at last week’s Maybank Malaysian Open.
For the moment, the Frenchman is all set for the ALLIANZ Open Côtes d’Armor Bretagne, along with his playing mates Julien Grillon, Xavier Poncelet and Romain Schneider.
