Fran Halsall and Aschwin Wildeboer shine in Rome: Sette Colli Trophy 2011
Day two of the 2011 Sette Colli Trophy got off to a flying start with the impressive performances of Fran Halsall, Aschwin Wildeboer, Alia Atkinson and Zsuzsanna Jakabos in the 100m freestyle, 100m back-stroke and 50m breast-stroke events respectively, in
Rome, Italy, on June 18.
In the Women’s 100m freestyle event, the Commonwealth champion, Fran Halsall claimed the golden crown with a winning time of 53.72 seconds and broke Femke Heemskerk’s previous record of 54.19 seconds, set last year.
Placing second in the corresponding meet was Ranomi Kromowidjojo with a time of 54.05 seconds for her 5th place in the world rankings, while Jeanette Ottesen earned third place honours with a time of 54.50 for her 8th place in the international
rankings.
Previously, Halsall won the silver medal in the Women’s 100m butterfly meet at the British Gas ASA National Championships 2011, last week.
Marleen Veldhuis wound up fourth in the race with a time of 55.00 seconds, while Federica Pellegrini surprisingly was placed fifth with a time of 55.19 seconds.
Meanwhile, the Men’s 100m back-stroke crown was clinched by Aschwin Wildeboer with a fastest time of 53.67 seconds. More importantly, Wildeboer broke Randall Bal’s previous of 53.67 seconds, set in 2008 and improved to 6th place in the global
rankings.
Placed second in the corresponding race was Aristeidis Grigoriadis with a sterling time of 54.91 seconds, whereas, Liam Tancock of Great Britain rounded out the top three in 55.00 seconds.
Alia Atkinson took home the Women’s 50m breast-stroke title with a genuine time of 31.06 seconds, while Dorothea Brandt earned second place honours in time of 31.68 seconds for her 4th place in the world rankings. Natasha Waitzer finished third
in 31.69 seconds for her 24th place in the international rankings.
Last, but not the least, Zsuzsanna Jakabos won the Women’s 200m butterfly crown with a victorious time of 2 minutes and 07.67 seconds for her 9th spot in the world rankings, while Denise Riccobono wound up second in 2 minutes and 10.90 seconds
Emanuela Albenzi earned third place honours with a time of 2 minutes and 11.97 seconds.
