Franc Dancevic upsets Brian Dabul in straight sets at Miami
26-year-old Canadian Franc Dancevic defeated 5th seeded Argentinean Brian Dabul by 7-6(3), 6-1 to advance in the qualifiers at the 2011 Sony Ericsson Open on Monday.
Both players displayed their amazing skills in the opening set as they held all of their serves spectacularly. Although Dancevic smashed eight ferocious aces and earned an amazing 90 percent win on his slightly lower first serve
percentage, he failed to convert the only breakpoint opportunity he earned and took the set to tiebreaker. The world number 202 Dancevic, who showed his skills at Johannesburg as he dumped the top seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the first round and reached
the quarter-finals, prevailed in the tiebreaker to clinch the set 7-6(3).
The Canadian improved his winning ways in the second set as he just conceded a single game and through his tremendous forehands and backhands he won the set with a breadstick. He hammered five massive aces and registered an astonishing
91 percent win on his higher first serve share. Furthermore, he broke Dabul’s serve twice to clinch convincingly.
He will next face American Donald Young who also upset a seeded player to reach the next qualifying round. The world’s number 128 Young also reached this spot after upsetting 15th seeded French Arnaud Clement in three
sets. He bounced back from one set down to clinch 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 against the 33-year-old Clement by converting three opportunities to his advantage in one hour and 50 minutes.
16th seeded Belgian Olivier Rochus ease past Italian Flavio Cipolla by 6-3, 6-2 in just under 86 minutes.
Ranked 89th in the world, Rochus produced no ace and had a lower first serve percentage of 57 percent as opposed to Cipolla’s 67 percent. However he with his awesome tact and agility, he registered an impressive 71 percent
win on his first serve and saved all the three breakpoints he conceded. He then broke the Italian serve once to clinch the set with a 6-3 score line.
The 30-year-old Belgian carried his winning ways to the next set and held his opening serve. He then held his entire remaining serve spectacularly and broke Cipolla’s serve twice to win the set 6-2. He earned a plausible 88 percent
win on his higher first serve share and also earned more return points.
