France, Spain and Brazil prevail: FIBA U-19 World Championship for Women July 27 Roundup (Part 2)
Chinese Taipei 57 – 74 France
In a one sided group F fixture on Wednesday, France eased their way past the Chinese Taipei. Hélèna Akmouche, the French shooting guard top scored for her team with 16 points.
Adja Konteh and Clarince Djaldi-Tabdi both played for 20 minutes each and produced almost similar statistics. Konteh scored 10 points and gathered 7 rebounds, whereas Tabdi bucketed 11 points and caught 7 rebounds.
Wei-Lin Wang, the Chinese Taipei small forward, was the best player for her team as she managed to hit home 11 points and scoop 3 rebounds.
The French took charge of the proceedings from the first quarter and continued piling up their lead. The halftime score was 25-37 and France continued to go for the kill in the second half. A solid performance in the last two
quarters meant a comfortable victory for the French.
Spain 83 – 48 Chile
The hosts, Chile, once again put on a poor show and were obliterated by an impressive Spanish team. Spain’s most effective player once again emerged in the form of Astou Ndour. The Spanish centre played for 16 minutes, during which
she racked up 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Inmaculada Zanoguera also added 14 points towards the mammoth Spanish total and also plucked 9 rebounds in the process. From the Chilean side, point guard Fernanda Mansilla earned 14 points and 6 rebounds and led a one woman army.
The Spanish side totally governed the pace of the game as they scored just over 20 points on average, every quarter. By halftime, the score read 39-24. The distance continued to grow between the points of both teams, until the
game ended with a margin of 35 points. It was a much welcome victory for Spain, who had suffered two narrow defeats in their last two games.
Brazil 75 – 47 Australia
Group F saw a rather shocking result as Brazil literally trounced a fine Australian side. Once again, it was the Brazilian centre, Damiris Dantas, who stole the show with a scintillating performance consisting of 24 points, 16
rebounds and 4 steals.
Dantas received ample support from small forward Tassia Carcavalli, who canned 20 points, robbed her opponents with 4 steals and scooped 3 rebounds. Despite Australia’s poor show, Rebecca Allen chipped in with14 points, 8 rebounds
and 3 steals while Tayla Roberts gathered10 points and 12 rebounds.
The game got off to a cagy start as the first quarter ended 8-10 in favour of Australia. The second quarter was evenly matched as well, with Brazil just edging it by 22 points to 19. Halftime saw the two teams stand at 30-29, with
Australia lagging behind by just 1 point. However, what promised to be an exciting second half, soon turned into a nightmare for Australia, as they were unable to handle the Brazilian onslaught.
