France Epee Team captures gold medal against Korea in Epee World Cup of Men’s team in Buenos Aires
After the individual event victory, The French athletes captured another excellent gold medal victory in Team discipline of Epee contest named Epee World Cup of Men’s Team that was taken place on June 19 in Buenos Aires in Argentina.
French Gauthier Grumier had already taken the gold medal victory in the individual event of similar World Cup of Men’s Epee discipline. At the end French anthem was rung out as they were on the top of the both events. The French team consisted of Jean-Michel
Lucenay, Yannick Borel and Ronan Gustin.
The tournament's day started with pool matches. Italian, French, Russian and United State’s fencers were undefeated during all the bouts of pool matches. Total sixteen Epee teams qualified for the table of 16 of direct elimination round. French faced Brazil
in the table of 16 and defeated them with an easy score-line of 45-16. They faced China after qualifying for the quarter-final. After a strong competition of 45-35, France advanced to semi-final defeating China. Italian team qualified for the semi-final round
after beating US. French and Italians were the opponent in semi-final round.
Although Italy was having very talented and experienced athletes for Epee discipline, but French dropped them with amazing 45-32 touches and advanced to the play-offs to face Korea. The confrontation with Korea for winning the competition was tighter, 44-43,
but ultimately the French were climbing on top of the podium.
With this victory, France not only took the gold medal of the event, but also was honoured with the lead in world rankings ahead of Hungary. Korea was crowned with a silver medal and came up as a second seed in the tournament’s rankings. Hungary and Italy
were put into the fight for bronze medal. Hungarian fencers amazingly defeated Italy with a score of 45-28 touches. United States defeated China with 33-32 points and was ranked fifth in the competition. The International Federation of Fencing FIE will soon
update the World Ranking points for Buenos Aires Epee competition.
