France and Denmark cruise into 2011 Handball Championship semi-finals – Handball Recap
The 2011 World Women’s Handball Championship is being held in Brazil. The event began on December 2, 2011 and would end on December 18, 2011. Twenty-four women’s handball teams from all over the world are participating in his event. From December 14, 2011,
the tournament entered the quarterfinal rounds which featured the last eight teams of the tournament. France and Denmark won their respective matches and head into the semi-finals of the tournament.
On December 14, 2011, the Russian women’s handball team played their quarterfinal match against France. Both teams had performed well in the group stages of the tournament. Russia was undefeated by winning all five of their matches and they kept their unbeaten
streak alive as they entered the semi-finals. The French women’s handball team, on the other hand, also performed well in the group stages by losing only one match.
During the quarter finals, both teams were in a do or die situation as their semi-final hopes hanging on the line. With an attendance of two-thousand spectators at the Ginasio G.J. de Almeida indoor sporting arena in Sao Paulo, Brazil, both teams locked their
heads in the match. The match was equally balanced as both teams gave their best in winning the game.
In a closely fought match, France came out as the winner as they defeated Russia 25-23. The Russian handball players came closer in winning the match but they could not contain the French players. From Russia, Emiliya Turey was
the top scorer with seven goals while French player, Alexandra Lacrabere scored five goals for her team.
Another quarterfinal of the tournament was played between Angola and Denmark on December 14, 2011. The Angolan women’s national handball team has played well in other championships but they could not get their act together while facing Denmark in the quarterfinals.
Denmark won the match 28-23. Denmark retained its winning streak as they remained unbeaten in the group stages.
Although Angola had lost two games in the group stage and barely won their round of sixteen match against South Korea by one goal. In the quarterfinals, Denmark proved to be the winning team by winning the match by five goals.
For Denmark, Ann Grete Norgaard, scored seven goals while for Angola, Azenaide Carlos also scored seven goals.
