France and Italy win: FIBA U-19 World Championship for Women Roundup July 22, 2011(Part 1)
France 20 – Nigeria 0
On the second day of the tournament, the French team was scheduled to come face to face with Nigeria in a Group-C game. However, due to the absence of the Nigerian squad, France earned a walkover with 20 points.
This procedure will remain same for the rest of the teams in Group-C and they will all get byes in the first round of the tournament. As per FIBA rules, a team can lose the game by forfeit, if it fails to reach the court before
the first 15 minutes of the game time or if the entire team is not present or no less than five players not succeeds to make it to the court. In all such situations, the game will be rewarded to the opponent team with 20-0 score.
Team Nigeria failed to make it to the tournament because their basketball federation did not make sufficient arrangements for their travel. Nigerian coach was also disappointed at the unfortunate event, but still said that as a
coach it’s a part of his job to deal with such kind of situations.
However, coach said this will cost Nigerian basketball. Since there is a high probability that FIBA will either fine Nigeria or impose a ban on them for not participating after confirmation.
Italy 70 – China 64
Italy managed to squeak past China 70-64 in a Group-A game on Friday. Italy has now earned four points and is standing head to head with Canada at the top of the group.
Debora Carangelo led all scorers with 19 points, four steals and three rebounds. She played for 24 minutes during which she shot six of 10 from the field including three of six from the three-point range and four of four from the
free throw line. Giulia Maffenini also chipped in with 17 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steal for the Italian side.
For China, Mengran Sun scored 18 points, grabbed nine rebounds, dished out two assists and made one steal. She stayed on the court for 33 minutes, hitting eight of 14 from the field and two of two from the free throw line. Dong
Yu also contributed for the Chinese with 13 points and five rebounds.
Italians made a solid start and managed to take a five points lead, 14-9, at the end of the first quarter. The Chinese quickly got themselves together in the very next quarter and outscored the Italians 21-18 to make it a two point
game heading into the break.
Italy led China by 32-30 going into third quarter and from there on the real fight began. Both teams stepped up the ante and by the time, the third quarter ended, the scores were tied at 48 and the game wide open. However, in the
final quarter, the Chinese team failed to carry on with their momentum and got outscored 22-16 to surrender the game.
