France and Norway win semi-finals at the 2011 World Women’s Handball Championships – Handball News
The 2011 World Women’s Handball Championships entered into the semi-finals on December 16, 2011. The last four teams entering into the semis were France, Denmark, Norway and Spain. In the first semi-final, France took on Denmark
for a place into the finals. The French women’s national handball team were successful in beating Denmark 28-23, to make their place in the finals of the competition.
For the French team, they emerged as the winners in the World Championships at the 23 event however; they did come at the second spot in the World Championships of 1999 and 2009.  The semi-final was being played at the Ginasio
G.J. de Almeida, the indoor sports arena situated in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
With an attendance of nearly fifteen hundred handball enthusiasts, the semi-final was primarily a French dominated match where the former champions remained in the lead. Their opponent, the women’s handball team from Denmark, has
also been a one-time winner at the World Championship where they became champions at 1997.
They never managed to come at the top three spots. At this year’s championships, the Danish team were looking for a win in the semi-finals and securing a top spot but their plans were hindered by the energetic team from France.
French handball player Alexandra Lacrabere was the top scorer for her team as she scored ten goals, giving her team a decisive lead in the match. For Denmark, their player Line Jorgensen scored seven goals. The Danish team was
at the back foot from the start of the match and could create any decent opening for them to score goals.
The other semi-final of the 2011 World Women’s Handball Championship was played between Norway and Spain at the Ginasio G.J. de Almeida indoor arena in Sau Paulo. Norway won the semi-final 30-22 as Spain crashed from cruising into
the competition.
Norwegian women’s national handball team won the World Championships in 1999 and earned top second and third place various times. The Norway handball team comprehensively defeated the Spanish handball team. For Norway, Heidi Loke
scored seven goals while for Spain, Macarena Aguilar, scored six goals. The Spanish team were looking to play the finals of the World Championship for the first time but the Norwegian team maintained their dominance throughout the semi-final.
