France defeats Brazil by 3-2 in Boys' Youth World Championship match - Volleyball
The French were up against the Brazilians on August 21st in a Boys' Youth World Championship match that took place in Almirante Brown, Argentina. The resulting competition took five long sets to reach its close at the end of which the French found themselves
celebrating a win by 3-2.
The first set of the match was pretty much one sided as the Brazilians came out strong and were able to dominate the French all through. However, France stepped up in the second set and challenged the Brazilians significantly to grab a win and equalise the
match. The Brazilians responded by hammering down the French completely in the third set and did a quick job of the win but the French side took the game to a deciding fifth set by bagging the fourth one. The final set of the game was tough but the French
prevailed and secured the match at the following final set scores: 14-25, 25-20, 9-25, 25-22 and 15-12.
The coach of the French team Jean-Manuel Leprovost, made the following comments at the press conference after the match: “It is always special to play against Brazil. It is sad they couldn’t go through the next phase in the competition. Brazil deserved to
be among the best teams. We had a difficult group to deal with. We qualified and we are planning to reach the final.”
Whereas the Brazilian coach Percy Oncken gave the following statements: “I congratulate France. We did not achieve our goal that we have been planning for five months. Good luck to France.”
The first technical time out of the opening set came with a Brazilian lead at 8-6 which they were able to extend till 16-8. The French could not do much except trail behind at 21-10 and finally see the Brazilians off to a win at 25-14.
The French were able to take the lead early on in the second set and they still had the advantage at 13-6. The Brazilians gradually reduced the gap to 20-17 but could not stop France from securing a win at 25-20.
The Brazilians came out strong in the third set and took the lead at 8-2 that stretched till 16-5. Before the French could respond appropriately, the Brazilians had bagged the set at 25-9.
The French were leading at 16-13 when the second technical time out came in the fourth set but the Brazilians brought the score close to 23-20. However, it was the French side that finally sealed the deal at 25-22.
The fifth set was tied at 8-8 but France put on a spurt of speed and moved on to 13-11 after which they did not look bag until they had the set at 15-12.
Despite the fact that the Brazilians lost the match, their player Joao Ferreira was able to register the highest number of points in both the teams by scoring 19 of them while the French top scorer was Thibault Rossard at 16 points.
