France pull off a comeback win against Czech Republic to qualify for the semis – Statistical Breakdown
In the last quarterfinal on Tuesday night, the French women basketball team pulled of the comeback of the tournament so far to manage a 71-68 win over the Czech Republic, and a place in the semi-finals against Russia.
Down 41-51 heading into the fourth quarter, and trailing by as many as 13 points at one point, team France came back with a fury in the final period to record 30 points while holding the Czechs only 17 points.
Céline Dumerc led the French comeback in the final quarter by putting up 10 points finishing the game with a total of 23 points on a 10 of 15 shooting night. She also made 3 of 5 three pointers in the game.
Endéné Miyem pounded 14 points while Emilie Gomis and Isabelle Yacoubou managed to add 9 points each. The latter did most of her scoring from the free throw line by shooting the ball 7 of 8 from the charity stripe.
On the other hand, despite having four players scoring in double figures, the Czech’s were unable to hold off a late charge of from the French women and bowed out. Eva Viteckova led the way with 17 points and played an important
role in getting her side a 10 point lead after the first three quarters.
Ilona Burgrova was not far behind with 16 points while Katerina Elhotova and Jana Vesela both chipped in with 12 points shooting the ball a combined 11 of 20 from the field.
The sides remained equally competitive on both ends of the floor in the first half, which ended at 28 apiece. Viteckova was hot from the long range in the third which led to a huge lead for the Czechs, but the French intensity
down the stretch was a bit too much for the Czechs to handle.
France shot the ball 46.3% from the field and in comparison the Czech shot 46 % for the game. Both sides attempted 14 three pointers with the French converting 5 of them while the Czech could only knock down 3 of their attempts
from the long range.
France had a 34-30 advantage on the boards with both teams having an equal number of 11 rebounds on the offensive glass.
