  3. Here's a few sights:

La Conciergerie - A castle that was turned into a prison in which Marie Antoinette was held before being guillotined.

Saint Chapelle - The church build by King Louis IX to house the Crown of Thorns and a piece of the True Cross.

Arc de Triomphe - Ordered built by Napoleon I to celebrate his victories

Shakespere and Company - the little bookstore whose owner published James Joyce, Henry Miller and many other authors at a time when their works were considered obscene and couldn't be published eleswhere.

Harry's New York Bar (5 rue Danou) the place where the Bloody Mary and the Sidecar were invented and the American expatriate community in the 20's and 30's hung out.

Roman Baths - When Paris was a city in the Roman empire the baths on what is now the Blvd. St. Michel were built. They have been excavated and can be visited.

    And here's a few restaurants:

La Tour D'argent - Stillone of the great rastaurants in Paris and one of the most expensive. what do you expect from a place whose name can be translated as "the tower of money." Go there and eat duck. they number each duck they sell and the customers name who ate it is entered into their ledgers.

Le Procope - People have been eating here since Francesco Procopio opened it in 1689. Everyone from Voltaire to Benjamin Franklin have eaten here.

Aux Lapin Agile - This Montmartre hangout is where Picasso used to kick back and have dinner.

    Some observations on local customs:

    1) People will run into you right and left. French people simply don't look where they're going, and they depend on other people not to bump into them.

    2) People stare at you a great deal, no matter how unremarkable you may be. I've never understood this but they do. Pay no attention as no one means you any harm.

    3) When you pay for something the person taking your money expects you to put it down, rather than taking it directly from your hand. Most places have a sort of tray on the counter expressly for this purpose.

    4) When you're in a theater and have to go by someone to get to your seat always pass in front of them facing toward them, that is, away from the screen or the stage. It's very rude otherwise.
