France slips past Italy, 3-2 – Volleyball News
France secured a splendid victory against Italy in Pool C of the 2012 FIVB World League by games scores of 29-31, 25-23, 25-18, 21-15, and 15-12 on Friday.
The two arch-rivals met at the Dallas Convention Centre Arena and showcased their volleyball skills in front of around 500 spectators. French team earned seventh win in the tournament and totalled 19 points. Italy, on the other hand, suffered the loss and
shifted to 4-6 in the competition.
France’s Marien Moreau and Michal Lasko of Italy came into stride for the top-scorer’s position. Moreau notched up 24 points and finished on the winning side. Italian top-gun Lasko added match-high 26 points, but failed to lead his team to success. Hence,
it was more of a failing effort for the highest scorer of the match.
Opening set of the match covered its length in 34 minutes and the situation remained undecided until the final whistle of referee. Both teams exchanged long rallies and regularly traded lead. After many ups and downs, Italy settled for first-set win at 31-29.
After dropping the opening set, France brought more ferocity in attack and stormed Italy’s half with unstoppable spikes. The hard work paid off and French team managed to level the game score by winning second set.
French team carried the momentum and added another set-win to its count by posting 25-18 on board. Meanwhile, Italy fought back and created the dead-lock of 2-2 by winning fourth set.
The game entered crucial fifth set, which served as the final test of skills for both teams. In the end, France came on top and claimed match victory by winning fifth set.
“Congratulations to France. We are neighbors and we like to fight. I am happy we were able to get to the fifth set because those are hours we needed on the court. No lack of focus. If I can do away with the first set it was nice and fun and a good fight.
My best wishes to France to win a ticket to Bulgaria,” said Italian coach Mauro Berruto after the match.
French coach Philippe Blain was more than happy about his team's performance. He urged his players to stay on the winning course in the coming matches.
Skipper of Team France, Pierre Pujol also expressed delight about match-victory. His Italian counterpart Cristian Savani regretted the loss, but called it a useful match gain momentum for upcoming games.
Next up, France is scheduled to take on hosts United States whereas Italy will go against South Korea.
