France wins the bid to host the 2018 Ryder Cup
France has won the bid to host the 2018 Ryder Cup. The 42nd edition of the biennial event will take place at Le Golf National in Versailles, which is located in the suburbs of Paris.
The big news, that had the attention of five countries locked in a single decision, was broken at the Wentworth Club by Chief Executive of the European tour, George O’Grady.
O’Grady said that for the first time in 21 years, France had earned the chance of hosting a tournament that is held once in two years between teams from Europe and United States.
Present in the press conference was Richard Hills, Director of Europe’s Ryder Cup with his entire commission, which was responsible behind the selection of the bid. Hills congratulated France over the honours and shed light on the selection criteria for
the event.
Hills said that the committee analysed the five countries namely, France, Germany, Holland, Portugal and Spain on the following criteria; development of golfing facility in future, development of an international level infrastructure to host an international
event, support from the government, contribution to golf bodies and provision of commercial development.
Hill stated, “We would like to congratulate France on becoming the host for The 2018 Ryder Cup, but more importantly, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to all the representatives of France, Germany, Holland, Portugal and Spain, who responded
so diligently to Ryder Cup Europe’s bidding criteria and conducted themselves in a thoroughly professional manner throughout the most detailed evaluation process, as we have ever embarked upon.”
He added that the Ryder Cup committee was looking forward to a strong relationship with the French Ryder Cup after the contract, which was signed between two of the parties during the process.
France has hosted 118 European Tour events in the past, which excludes 60 European Challenge Tour and 12 European Senior Tour tournaments. Moreover, it is the house of French Open, which takes place every year at Le Golf National, the venue for the 2018
Ryder Cup. Following the custom, it will host the 2011 Alstom Open de France for the tenth consecutive year since its inauguration in 1991.
