France’s Julien Simon wins Prueba Villafranca de Ordizia 2011 - Cycling News
Saur – Sojasun team’s Julien Simon showed a tremendous effort in Prueba Villafranca de Ordizia 2011 in Ordizia on Monday, July 25.
The 25-year-old, French road bicycle racer took the total of 4 hours, 2 minutes and 27 seconds to cover the distance of 166 kilometres.
Daniel Moreno Fernandez of Katusha was runner-up and Pablo Lastras Garcia of Movistar was in third place with the same timing of Simon.
Peio Bilbao (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Julien Antomarchi (Velo-Club La Pomme Marseille) and Jose Herrada Lopez (Caja Rural) were in seventh, eighth and ninth place respectively.
A group of five cyclists made their breakaway lead with the same timing of Sprinter. Joaquím Rodriguez Oliver of the Katusha team was in good form and tried his best to catch the leading riders but failed to hold his pace and grabbed sixth place with the
difference of 28 seconds.
The stage is difficult for the cyclist because it contain seven mountains and four sprints. The group of three cyclists gained their first lead including, Garikoitz Bravo Oiarbide (Caja Rural), Ricardo Vilela (Onda) and Pascual Orengo Lopez (Burgos 2016
- Castilla y Leon).
Garikoitz increased his pace and managed to gain a lead in the first three mountains of the stage ahead of Antonio Piedra Perez.
With a few kilometres to go, David Lopez launched an attack and took the fifth mountain but he failed to hold his pace in the next climb and Juan Jose Cobo Acebo took the points. However, in the final mountain, Katusha team took control and Joaquim Rodriguez
Oliver took a lead ahead of Jon Izaguirre Insausti.
However, Garikoitz Bravo took the overall King of Mountain title with 12 points ahead of Antonio Piedra Perez and Juan Jose Cobo Acebo.
When the race entered in Ordizia, Burgos 2016 - Castilla y Leon rider Pascual Orengo Lopez took the first three sprints of the stage ahead of Antonio Piedra Perez. However, in the final sprint David Lopez Garcia increased his pace and managed to take the
fourth sprint.
However, Pascual took the overall sprint classification with 9 points ahead of Antonio Piedra. Jon Izaguirre took the title of U23 classification with 4 hours, 2 minute and 27 seconds and Peio Bibao was in second place with a difference of 36 seconds.
Mikel Bizkarra of Orbea Continental finished third with the difference of 1 minute and 29 seconds.
