France’s Raphael Jacquelin triumphs in Sicilian Open, nabs his third European Tour title
The rain delayed final round of the Sicilian Open concluded today, with Raphaël Jacquelin holding his nerves to mark his third victory playing in Europe.
Jacquelin only completed twelve holes yesterday and the tournament committee called the day off due to bad weather conditions. The confident Frenchman finished the tournament by carding a round of three-under par.
The 36-year old from France had a total of four birdies and a single bogey on his card. He made a birdie on the 14th which took him closer to victory. This much awaited win came after four years; he last won the BMW Asian Open in 2007.
Raphael beat off stiff competition from Anthony wall, winning by a single stroke. Wall finished the tournament with a moderate round of three-under par, 68; his score card showed six birdies, one bogey and a disastrous double bogey.
The Englishman, Wall double-bogeyed the par-4, 17th and it turned out to be a costly one for him. He was in the lead before the 17th hole troubled him. Wall was rather disappointed with his blemish for the final round and finished the tournament with an aggregate score of eleven-under par, 273.
Wall was seeking his second victory in eleven years: he last won the Alfred Dunhill Championship in 2000 and hasn’t won a tournament since. Though it was Jacquelin’s day, Wall wasn’t too disappointed with his performance.
“But for one bad swing that was only half a bad swing I may have been the winner, but we pushed each other all the way and I'm pleased with my game,” he said.
A few other players also completed their rounds today. The experienced Jose Manuel Lara of Spain also finished his round and carded a score of three-under par. He finished the championship with an aggregate score of seven-under par, 277. Lara shared the third place with Sweden's Joel Sjoholm.
