Francesca Schiavone, Melinda Czink through to the third round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
2011 French Open finalist Francesca Schiavone laboured to a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of Czech Republic on Thursday to make it to the third round of 2011 Wimbledon Championships in United Kingdom.
Schiavone, who had a difficult first round match against Australian Jelena Dokic, looked in much more control of her game in the second round completing her straight sets victory in 1 hour and 42 minutes. Although the Italian made
a slow start to the match, she managed to bring rhythm to her game with the progress of the match.
Seeded 6th at the prestigious Women’s Tennis Association tournament, Schiavone’s best run at Wimbledon was recorded in 2009 when she reached the quarterfinal of the tournament. However if she can maintain her current
form over the next week or so, she can certainly achieve her best results at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
Looking for a place in third round of the championships, Schiavone made a traffic start to the contest. Breaking the serve early in the opening set, she dented her opponent’s confidence levels. Strycova was also up for the challenge
as she raised the level of her game to break straight back, evening the game score 3-3. Schiavone had her second chance of breaking the serve in eleventh game of the set, which she converted successfully to bag the set.
The second set also followed a similar trend with both players putting in a lot of effort to get the first serve break. Schiavone converted two of three break points in the set to establish complete control over the situation.
Strycova broke back once to restore some of the lost pride but she was unable to stop her rival from earning a well deserved victory.
Converting half of the break chances in the match, Schiavone made most of the opportunities that were presented to her. Contrastingly Strycova wasted a number of break chances and hence paid the price. Her inability to hit winners
proved to be the real difference between the contestants at the end of the day. Schiavone will face Tamira Paszek in her next match-up.
In another match, Hungarian tennis player Melinda Czink defeated Anastasiya Yakimova 7-5, 6-3 to book her place in the third round.
Czink served with control and accuracy as she achieved 73 per cent first serve. Despite making a whopping 27 unforced errors in the match, the Hungarian was able to hit her way out of the trouble with her fabulous forehand and
backhand winners. Czink also used her clever drop shots to great effect to earn points at crucial moments.
