Francesca Schiavone ousts Ekaterina Makarova in the 2nd round – Rogers Cup 2011
Wednesday the 10th of August 2011 was the start of the second round of the Rogers Cup 2011. Italian, Francesca Schiavone and Ekaterina Makarova battled it out on the hard courts of the Rexall Centre in York University,
Toronto, Canada. Schiavone outfoxed Makarova in a 6-1, 6-3 victory in simply 61 minutes.
The 31-year-old is one of the top 10 players and with laser pin point accuracy she struck zero double faults and her unfaltering defence did not create a situation for her opponent to break her, instead, she broke her opponent
twice and gained a competitive edge.
Meanwhile, due to lack of precision Makarova’s served wobbled and she struck one double fault and although, she had hit 68% of first serves on target, she was unable to achieve a decent score in her second serve, hence attaining
only 45% of her total service points.
The world number 8 (Schiavone) with her powerful forehand and well placed shots towards the baseline, facilitated her in clogging 80% win in her total service points, along with a commanding springy back hand that “kangoo jumped”
most of her opponent’s shot, won her an above average 55% in her total return points.
On the contrary, the 23-year-old (Makarova) had a defence that was slipping away and toppling as she was only able to save 3 break points and barely put together 20% of total return points won. Hence, she lost the set with 33%,
while her Italian opponent not only won 67% of her total set points but had almost twice as many points.
After winning the first set, she set the tone for the second and was not to let the 23-year-old triumph over her now. Only slipping for the first few minutes of the match Schiavone struck 2 net balls and was not able to save the
only break point on her serve.
However, after the slip she gained control of the match and reeled her way towards victory, by winning a commendable 63% of her total service points, in opposition to her opponent who only managed a 45% win.
Moreover, the Italian had an excellent reflex action that re-coiled her adversary’s shots and enabled her to win an above average 55% win in her total return points against her rival, who mustered a pathetic 37%, win in the total
return points of the set.
In addition, by accomplishing 28 out of 48 points, making it a praiseworthy 58% win in her total set points she secured a berth in the third round of the Rogers cup.
Standing at 1.66 meters, Francesca Schiavone had won with 8 more points than her opponent’s in straight sets and will now either be facing the Romaine Samantha Halep or the Czech Lucie Safarova.
