Francesca Schiavone outplayed Zuzana Ondraskova in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open
World number five Francesca Schiavone of Italy faced no difficulty as she defeated Zuzana Ondraskova of Czech Republic in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, California on Friday night. Schiavone received
a bye to compete directly in the second round and took merely one hour to conclude her straight sets victory at 6-2, 6-0, advancing to the third round of the tournament.
An outstanding display of high quality tennis from the fifth seed gave no chance to Ondraskova to come on top. The Czech proved to be no match for Schiavone, as the Italian completely dominated the contest by pushing Ondraskova
to commit mistakes. The Italian exerted immense pressure upon Ondraskova, who crumbled to surrender the match.
Ondraskova’s bleak serve bestowed 11 break opportunities to the Italian, who converted just six out of those. Although the Schiavone delivered 40 per cent of her first serve on target, the points winning proficiency proved the
critical success factor in the game for her. A total of 83 points were played in the match, with the Italian bagging 55 and Ondraskova taking just 28.
Schiavone had an aggressive start to the opener, breaking the opponent’s serve early. Ondraskova retaliated with the same but couldn’t stand against the fury of her opponent. The Italian crafted eight break opportunities in the
first set but converted just three out of them. She raced to an impassable lead of 5-2 in the opening 30 minutes of the contest and then served out of it to lead 1-0 in the game.
The second set brought no luck for the Czech as the strong fifth seed opponent kept her winning momentum going. Denying Ondraskova a single game win, Schiavone broke the Czech’s serve three times. The Italian was excellent with
her return game, winning 100 per cent of her second return points.
Four costly double faults from Ondraskova exacerbated her position in the match and she failed to clinch points in the set. Out of 34 total points being played in the second set, the Czech hardly secured 9 while the rest were won
by her opponent. Schiavone kept playing calculated strokes with great mastery to reel off five straight games, leading 5-0. Ondraskova had no other choice than to surrender the sixth game to her opponent at 6-0 and let her pass to the third round of the BNP
Paribas Open.
Schiavone moves on ahead into the next round where she will be taking on the French qualifier Alize Cornet. The French has been in excellent form in the initial rounds and won her contest against the 30th seed Bulgarian,
Tsvetana Pironkova to reach the third round at Indian Wells.
