Francesca Schiavone will be the top seed contestant in AEGON Classic 2012 – Tennis News
World number 12, Francesca Schiavone, receives a wildcard for the AEGON Classic and becomes the top seed contestant of the tournament. She is the former French Open champion who accepted the wildcard offered by the officials of
the grass court season opener tournament.
The draw ceremony for the AEGON Classic took place in Edgbaston Priory Club and featured the likes of three beautiful tennis divas; former world number one, Jelena Jankovic, the 29-year-old Slovak superstar, Daniela Hantuchova,
and the Romanian gorgeous lady, Sorana Cirstea.
Top eight seeds of the tournament will not play in the opening round as they received a bye. British tennis ace, Elena Baltacha, is the 15th seed contestant who will take on the likes of the Taiwanese surprise package,
Kai-Chen Chang, in the opening round.
Jankovic was stunned in the second round of the French Open whilst Cirstea got a very tough draw against the defending champion, Li Na, in the opening round. Hantuchova pulled out of the contest so all these players are out of
form at the moment. So, all these players will look to build some momentum and revive their form just before the third Grand Slam tournament of the year kicks off at Wimbledon. With the London Olympics around the corner, they would like to be on top of their
form before the grandest sporting event commences in August.
Other first round draws will feature the likes of the 81st ranked Briton star, Anne Keothavong, and takes on the quarter-finalist of 2011 Wimbledon Championship Tamira Paszek. The booming starlets from Great Briton;
the 20-year-old Heather Watson and her 18-year-old best friend, Laura Robson, are also in the main draw of the tournament. Watson will lock horns with the Argentine tennis ace, Paula Ormaechea, whilst Robson will go head-to-head with one of the qualifiers.
Talking about the tournament, Hantuchova said, “It’s my favourite surface. With the Olympics being played on grass (at Wimbledon) this year, it’s going to be a very exciting time of the year.” She lost to the most improved German
player, Sabine Lisicki, in 2011. However, she will look to bend her back this time around and make sure that she doesn’t disappoint her fanatics anymore.
The tournament kicks off in next week and it looks like a competitive draw. The grass court season is back and its time for stars like Hantuchova to make use of it and shine.
