Francesco Molinari commits to participate in the 2013 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open
Last season, the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open witnessed Francesco Molinari suffering a playoff defeat, after Jeev Milkha Singh outshined him on the first extra hole by draining a 12-foot birdie putt.
The Italian star is now hoping to go on position better, when he will tee off in the 2013 edition of the tournament, slated to start from July 11, 2012.
The tournament will be staged at the prestigious Castle Stuart Golf Links in Inverness, Scotland, offering a total prize fund of £3 million, to the participants.
The 2012 edition of the event saw both Singh and Molinari sharing the top spot after each player carded a 17-under par tournament score.
As a result, the game entered the sudden-death playoffs. The Indian star came out of the field as the victor, after he imposed the defeat on his Italian counterpart.
Despite the fact that Molinari failed to take home the prestigious title, the Italian said that he really enjoyed his experience to play on the gigantic Castle Stuart Golf Links.
He is now relishing the opportunity to participate in another edition of the tournament, scheduled to be held at the same course.
“I can’t wait to return to Castle Stuart – and hopefully go one better this time. I played some great golf during the four days but didn’t manage to close it out, which was really disappointing,” he said.
He added, “However, I love the course and the scenery. Scotland is the Home of Golf and to win a title there would be very special. It’s great to play links golf the week before The Open at Muirfield and I am looking forward to the opportunity in July”.
Last year, a total of 63,000 golf fans appeared on the course, making the tournament a big success.
As a result, the EventScotland named the tournament as the Sporting Event of the Year. The award was presented at the Sunday Mail and sportscotland Scottish Sports Awards ceremony.
Singh, who has confirmed to return to Scotland to defend his title, also praised the way the crowd supported him and other players who participated in the tournament.
“The crowds were fantastic,” he said. “They are knowledgeable about the etiquette of golf”.
