Francesco Molinari finishes the first round of the Spanish Open on the 6th position
Francesco Molinari scored a 2-under 70 in the first round of the Spanish Open on Thursday, standing tied for the sixth position on the leader board.
The 29-year-old Italian competed well throughout the day and displayed an amazing performance at the Real Club de Golf de Sevilla, in Seville, Spain.
“I’m very happy as I played really solid but it was tough as it can get,” Molinari said.
“The rough is just brutal, and the wind and rain make it hard to keep the ball on the fairway. My game was really good today, and hopefully it will be the same for the next three days and I’m sure I will have a chance to win this tournament on Sunday”.
The weather on the first day was unfavorable for most of the golfers. It was raining and heavy winds were blowing across the course. He performed well in such difficult conditions and finished the day on the sixth position.
He started the round in an impressive style, as he shot an early birdie on the first hole. Then he shot three consecutive pars and scored another birdie on the 5th hole. He shot his first bogey on the eight hole and ended the front nine holes by scoring
a one-under par.
He added two more birdies and one bogey on the back nine holes and reached the top-10 list of the leader board.
He is currently tying with Rafael Cabrera-Bello, Sam Hutsby, Matteo Manassero, Gary Ogr and Graeme Storm.
Among the six professionals, only two displayed a better-than-average performance.
Manassero shot a long eagle on the fifth hole and amazed the spectators for making four birdies as well.
Similarly, Storm shot an eagle on the 16th hole and scored two birdies and two bogeys as well.
Shaun Micheel is leading the scores after shooting a 5-under 67 in the first round. He shot eight birdies and three bogeys and took a one-stroke lead over the three runners-ups.
