Francesco Molinari has unfinished business to complete at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open
Francesco Molinari of Italy has set his sights on going one position better, when he tees off this year at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open. The tournament is slated to start from July 11, 2012.
Last year, he faced a playoff defeat, after Jeev Milkha Singh of India stunned him with a 12-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole.
He is now relishing the opportunity to return to the same field, where he mounted a strong title charge last year.
The tournament will be played at the Castle Stuart Golf Links in Inverness, Scotland, which is known as one of the beautiful golf courses in the region. Moreover, the event will offer a total prize fund of £3 million, to the participants.
Last year, Molinari entered the final round while holding the top spot on the leaderboard. Singh, in the meantime, was standing at the 15th position.
The last 18 holes witnessed Singh carding birdies on five of the first 10 holes that he played. Thereafter, he parred each of the last eight holes, to finish with a 17-under par tournament score.
Molinari, in the meantime, made a decent start, and reached the turn in one-under, thanks to his birdie on the ninth hole. He then bogeyed the 12th hole, prior to adding another shot to his scorecard on the 13th hole.
Entering the 15th hole, he held a one-stroke lead over Singh. However, a bogey on the 15th hole, followed by three par putts in a row forced him to enter into the playoffs along with Singh.
Thereafter, Singh imposed the defeat on his Italian counterpart, to record the fourth European Tour victory of his career.
“I can’t wait to return to Castle Stuart – and hopefully go one better this time. I played some great golf during the four days but didn’t manage to close it out, which was really disappointing,” Molinari said.
He added, “However, I love the course and the scenery. Scotland is the Home of Golf and to win a title there would be very special. It’s great to play links golf the week before The Open at Muirfield and I am looking forward to the opportunity in July”.
