Francesco Molinari lands in Morocco for the Trophee Hassan II
Two-time European Tour winner, Italian Francesco Molinari is looking for his third victory at this week’s Trophee Hassan II in Morocco and will be facing strong opponents of the likes of defending champion David Horsey, 2010 champion Rhys Davies and several
others.
The 29-year-old Italian has two European Tour victories on his belt and has four professional wins in his short career of six years.
The 2010 Ryder Cup team mate is eager to land the title at the luxurious Golf du Palais Royal of the Royal Palace of Agadir. He is paired with Davies and Horsey in the first two rounds of the event.
He said, “It is great to be here and the golf course is in great shape and the design of the course is very. I heard so much about the place before I came here that I have to say my expectations were very high and so far nothing has disappointed”.
Like many others in the field, Molinari felt intimidated with the first look of the Palace and its high walls. He was thrilled to see the course which many on the field, are not hesitant to compare it with the sprawling Augusta National.
He added, “I was a little bit surprised when I arrived and saw the Palace walls and it has been great to just be allowed in here to play. When you get into the Palace grounds and see the condition of the golf course you realise that you are in a special
place”.
Molinari earned his European Tour card in the year 2005 through the European Tour Qualifying Round and went over to win the Telecom Italia Open in 2006.
He is only the second Italian to land the home title after Massimo Mannelli since 1980.
He reached the zenith of his professional career when he broke into the top-50 on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) in 2009.
Molinari experienced another strong year in his career in 2010 when he won the WGC-HSBC Champions, defeating Lee Westwood by one stroke. He finished 5th on the European Tour Order of Merit.
The event is scheduled to kick off today at 7.30 local time.
