Francesco Molinari records third European Tour win at the Spanish Open
Francesco Molinari is the first Italian player to win the Spanish Open title, as he played a bogey-free final round on Sunday, May 6, 2012.
The 29-year-old professional golfer displayed an amazing performance and recorded his third European Tour victory by scoring an 8-under 280, at the Real Club de Golf de Sevilla in Seville, Spain.
He fired seven impressive birdies, shot a 7-under 65 and played the best round of the tournament on Sunday. He won the title by three strokes against three runners-up amazingly.
“Today's round was one of the best I played with conditions easier than the first three rounds,” Molinari said. “I just played really good golf all week but did struggle yesterday with the pace of the greens and the wind”.
He added: “It's huge, it's huge just to win any tournament on the European Tour, but one with the history of this one, in the year of the centenary, is something fantastic”.
He started the tournament on Thursday and shot a 2-under 70. Then he added a -1 in the second round and played averagely in the third. He was unable to be under par on Saturday and finished by scoring a 2-over 74.
On Sunday, he continued to play an amazing game. He displayed one of the best performances of his career and did not card any bogey till the end of the round. Posting a nice score took him to the top of the leaderboard.
"It's just to win any tournament on the European Tour, but one with the history of this one, in the year of the centenary, is something fantastic," Molinari said. "It's a very special time to win in Spain".
The Spaniards Pablo Larrazabal, Alejandro Canizares and Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen finished tied for the second position by scoring a 5-under 283 each.
They also played an appealing game throughout the tournament and competed well for the title. Larrazabal scored 71, 72, 69 and 71, Canizares made 74, 72, 68 and 69 and Kjeldsen shot 71, 70, 71 and 71 throughout the four rounds of the Spanish Open in Seville.
Molinari turned professional in 2004 and has recorded five professional victories so far. Now, there are plenty of chances left for the Italian golfer to to surprise his fans again in the upcoming European tour events.
