Francesco Pianeta to defend his undefeated streak against veteran Oliver McCall – Boxing News
Francesco Pianeta, the former EBU-EU (European Union) heavyweight champion, will defend his undefeated streak against heavily experienced Oliver McCall, the current World Boxing Foundation Intercontinental heavyweight champion, in a non-title bout on May
16, 2012.
The bout will co-headline the pay-per-view promoted by Ulf Steinforth of Sport Events Steinforth and will also witness Susi Kentikian defend her WBO female and WIBF Women's International Boxing Federation flyweight titles against Melissa McMorrow in the
main event.
The ring will be set up at Brandenburg Halle situated in Frankfurt, Brandenburg, Germany and the show will be televised live on Germany’s Das Vierte channel. The duo recently met at the pre-bout press conference and vowed to nail each other in an impressive
manner.
Francesco, at the moment, is in deep trouble since he is seriously outclassed by Oliver’s hefty experience. Pianeta, 27, has been in a total 26 bouts and boasts an undefeated streak.
The Italian proud has nailed 14 opponents by knockout and since his career’s only draw decision is on a seven-bout win streak. The young lad is coming from an impressive win over two heavily experienced pugilists Zack Page and Robert Hawkins.
His opponent, the American veteran Oliver, on the other hand, has been in a total 69 bouts and boasts 56 wins with just 11 losses. He has collected a huge 37 wins by knockout and his resilience level can be determined by the fact that he has lost just one
bout by knockout.
McCall, also known as ‘The Atomic Bull’, recently pinned Damian Wills via unanimous decision and grabbed the vacant World Boxing Foundation Intercontinental heavyweight title.
Oliver has a clear upper hand over Pianeta in all the facets of the sport whether its experience, knockout ability or win ratio. The only upper hand Pianeta has is his southpaw stance and age factor.
During the press conference, Francesco commented, “Oliver McCall is a very experienced guy. He’s boxed against the best. But if I want to get to the top, I have to beat him.”
At the same time, Oliver remained modest and remarked, “Francesco Pianeta is a young guy. I want to show him that the old timers don’t belong on the scrap heap. I’ve studied him for a long time and he still makes many errors. It is my job to show him this.
Also for me it’s always a special challenge to compete against an undefeated fighter.”
The bout will be a stiff test for the young Francesco and if he rises at the occasion he will definitely attract the attention of the ace heavyweights.
