Francesco Totti is a disgrace – Paolo Di Canio
Former Lazio skipper Paolo Di Canio has launched a scathing verbal attack on AS Roma favourite Francesco Totti following his embarrassing behaviour during Roma’s victory against Inter Milan on Saturday.
Francesco Totti was clearly unhappy at being substituted after 70 minutes in to the match and left the pitch. His substitute, Mirko Vucinic, scored the only goal of the match with a diving header in the dying stages of the match.
“What Totti did after his substitution was incredible. I think it was an absolute disgrace. All of us are angry at being substituted but I would have not been allowed to leave the field in such a manner. It’s an act of disrespect towards your team-mates
who are still on the pitch. A captain should always stay close and motivate the team”
Di Canio believes Vucinic’s celebrations following his winner were aimed at Totti. The former Aquile forward believes Vucinic was telling Totti to show more commitment to the team.
Francesco Totti has been with Roma throughout his football career. Francesco Totti is wildly regarded as the architect behind AS Roma’s 2001 Scudetto triumph. The forward made his debut in 1992 and has gone on to appear in a further 446 league matches scoring
192 goals. Il Capitano is the leading appearance maker and goal scorer in the Club’s history.
Totti’s career has never been free of controversy as the forward has made a habit of appearing in the press for all the wrong reasons. Last season he was red carded for kicking Mario Balotelli during the Roma-Inter match at Olimpico.
Di Canio believes Totti was a great player but his recent antics have taken a turn for the worst. “Everyone knows that Totti was a great player but its different now, real leaders always sacrifice for their team. The striker should look to Ryan Giggs and
Paul Scholes who would even play in the fullback position for Manchester United and still won’t complain”
Di Canio’s career wasn’t free of controversies as the player is a self-proclaimed Fascist. The forward has been videotaped and photographed in the past giving the controversial Roman Salute to Lazio supporters. His antics forced the Italian disciplinary
committees to ban him twice.
AS Roma and SS Lazio are cross city rivals with a fierce rivalry. Di Canio’s most recent comments are sure to spark a war of words between the two players.
