Francisco Jose Ventoso Alberdi wins the ninth stage of the Giro d’ Italia, Ryder Hesjedal continued his overall dominance
Francisco Jose Ventoso Alberdi of Team Movistar is having a good Giro and the cyclist claimed the biggest achievement of his career during the 171 kilometre stage 9 of the race.
He crossed the finish line in a fastest time of 3 hours, 39 minutes and 15 seconds and overcame his major competitors.
Fabio Felline of Team Androni Giocattoli finished seconds behind to achieve the second spot while Giacomo Nizzolo of Team RadioShack-Nissan occupied the third position.
Damiano Caruso of Team Liquigas-Cannondale, Daniel Schorn of Team NetApp and Alexander Kristoff of Team Katusha occupied the fourth, the fifth and the sixth positions respectively.
The Spaniard was lucky to have survived the crash in the final corner of the race and achieved his first victory at the Italian Grand Tour.
The 30-year-old was delighted after the win and thanked his colleagues for their support throughout the race.
He cited, "I came here to win a stage, but from now on we'll be working for Intxausti. He won the Tour of Asturias recently and we're sure he can do well here too. Our big goal is the GC".
This is the second victory by Alberdi in the current season after his remarkable performance at the stage 4 of the Circuit de la Sarthe.
Ryder Hesjedal of Team Garmin-Barracuda finished at the seventh spot and retained his dominance at the overall classifications.
Team Netapp finished at the top position with Team Movistar, Team Katusha, Team Vacansoleil-DCM and Team Liquigas-Cannondale securing the next four spots in the respective order.
Team Movistar, Team Netapp, Team Androni Giocattoli, Team Liquigas-Cannondale and Team RadioShack-Nissan were the top five super teams at the race with 29,29,19,19 and 18 points to their credit.
Hesjedal is now leading the stage 9 classifications with a total time of 36 hours, 2 minutes and 40 seconds while Joaquim Rodriguez of Team Katusha finishing 9 seconds behind at the second position.
Paolo Tiralongo of Team Astana is further 6 seconds behind at the third spot with his team-mate Roman Kreuziger holding the third and the fourth positions.
Team Liquigas-Cannondale is leading the stage 9 team’s classifications with Team Astana, Team Garmin-Barracuda and Team Lampre-ISD holding the next four positions respectively.
