Francisco Mancebo wins second stage and takes overall lead in 2011 Cascade Classic Stage Race
RealCyclist.com team’s Francisco Mancebo showed his good performance in the time trial of the second stage of 2011 Cascade Classic Stage Race in Summit High School on Thursday, July 21.
The 35-year-old Spanish cyclist took a total of 29 minutes and 5 seconds to cover the distance of 22.4 kilometres.
After finishing the stage, RealCyclist.com's DS Gord Fraser said, "Nothing Mancebo does surprises me anymore and he has been time trialing well all year, When you can beat a guy like Zirbel, on a course like that, says something. We are really happy with his result today."
Tom Zirbel of Jamis Sutter Home was a runner-up with 21 seconds behind Mancebo, while Jeremy Vennell of Bissell Pro Cycling was in the third place with a difference of 34 seconds.
The four riders, including Norm Bryner, Matt Cronshaw (Team Raleigh), Cory J Bruno (SoCalCycling.Com) and Michael Freiberg (V Australia Pro Cycling Team) were disqualified from the race.
Lachlan Morton of Chipotle Development took the title of overall best young rider with a timing of 3 hours, 19 minutes and 57 seconds. Cater Jones was in second and Chase Pinkham came third.
Mancebo also took the overall lead with a timing of 3 hours, 23 minutes and 41 seconds. His team-mate, Cesar Grajales, was the runner-up with 49 seconds and Jeremy Vennell finished third with a difference of 50 seconds.
In the Women's category, Calar Hughes of Cycling BC secured the second stage of Cascade classic stage race. The 38-year-old Canadian cyclist took a total of 32 minutes and 44 seconds to cover the distance of 22.4 kilometres.
Hughes told the media, "I'm really happy with the race, it was hard and it was a headwind on the way out, I just had to put my head down and put out as much power as I could on the way out. I wish I had a bigger gear on the way back.”
Kristin Armstrong of Peanut Butter & Co.twenty12 was the runner-up with 20 seconds behind Hughes. Erinne Willock was in the third place with a difference of 23 seconds.
Rushlee Buchanan (Colavita/Forno d’Asolo) took the title of young rider classification with a timing of 4 hours, 4 minutes and 22 seconds.
Jasmin Glaesser of Cycling BC was in the second place with 44 second and Leah Kirchmann was in the third place with 2 minute and 33 seconds behind Buchanan.
Hughes was confident in her ability and also took the overall lead with a timing of 4 hours, 1 minute and 56 seconds, while Erinne Willock was the runner-up with 13 seconds behind sprinter.
Kristin Armstrong was in the third place with a difference of 20 seconds.
The next stage will start in Summit High School and end in Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort.
