Francisco Rodriguez traded from New York Mets to Milwaukee Brewers – MLB News
It was decided on late Tuesday night that the Milwaukee Brewers acquired the New York Mets’ closer Francisco Rodriguez in place of two unnamed players. The Brewers’ General Manager, Doug Melvin had a view that the need of two closers is far better than a
veteran one.
The cash for exchanging Rodriguez is still in consideration but the Brewers are functioning with a payroll of about $90-million.
Rodriguez had an extraordinary record in the previous games and achieved a record of 291 career saves in last 10 seasons both with the Mets and the Los Angeles Angels. He was nicknamed as “K-Rod” because of his productive strike-out rates. Rodriguez moved
forward to gain some new opportunities with the backup of his supporters.
He left some comments for the Mets’ devotees and said, “I want to thank all the Mets fans for your support during these two and half years in which I wore this jersey.”
The deadline for all the MLB trades was defined as July 31, 2011. The Brewers had a tough series with the St. Louis Cardinals in the first half of the regular season because they had the closers with less experience. But now acquiring Rodriguez in their
roster will be a positive sign for the Brewers’ success.
Speaking to reporters, Melvin said, “Francisco has been one of the best relievers in the game for many years. He is a high-quality arm who will be a tremendous asset to our bullpen as we prepare for the final months of the regular season and playoffs.”
The Brewers have already one of the best closer in their line-up, named John Axford. With the combination of these two veterans, the Brewers were able to strengthen their bull-pen. Rodriguez had a promising third season with the Mets as he got 23 saves in
42 games and threw the ball with an ERA of 3.16. He gained four-time All-Star title due to his impressive performance during the Spring Training season.
Prince Fielder commented on Rodriguez and said, “That is a really big trade. He can really help us, he is a great player. It definitely gives us a spark.”
On the other hand, Axford also had an amazing record with his pitching as he got 23 saves in his last 25 games of the current season. Axford took the closers’ responsibilities in the mid of 2010 season when Trevor Hoffman completed his contract with the
Mets.
Rodriguez played his debut game for the Angels on September 18, 2002. In his overall MLB career statistics, Rodriguez had a Win-Loss record of 32-27 with 2.54 ERA, 773 strike-outs and 291 saves. Now it will be a new challenge for Rodriguez to prove his abilities
with the Brewers.
